First of all I want to pay my respect to all people who entered wars and gave their lives for a world of freedom. WILL and maturelover71, Please understand I'm not posting to question your ideas, opinions and "feel" with this celebration. But I have a problem with war. In all ways. The American way is imho a terror way too. I really like to show you why I have this opinion. I know this is not a political forum but maybe you'll understand my sceptisism. If you have the opportunity to download this, please do and let me know what you think.
The movie is called "Zeitgeist" and confronts everyone around the world with the ways wars are played.

I personally think everyone should see this and make up their own opinion. I'm a foreign politics student myself so maybe that's why I have an intense "feel" about this. I dunno...

Memorial day is an American holiday for remembering those men and women who have died in military service to the United States of America. As a former soldier, I can say with authority that the people who train for war are the ones that wish the least for it, regardless of circumstance. After all, it is they who are the ultimate political pawns who have to do the dirty wet work when diplomacy fails. Having said that, when called upon to do their duty, they go forward knowing full well that they may pay the ultimate sacrifice, regardless of the politics and subjective or objective reasons for the action. The fact is, very few Americans that I've known relish, glorify, or seek war. However, they do seek to honor those who have died for their freedom and way of life. I learned that long before I began and eventually earned any advanced degree's. On this Memorial Day holiday, I salute those I knew and those I didn't know, who lost their lives in battle.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my reply. That was never my intention. I just look from the outside to America and question the integrety of the discisions that are made or even situations that are created to katalyse discisions. Bohdi: did you never question why you were sent on a mission? I've seen a lot of documentaries where American soldiers didn't have a clue on why they are in Iraq or Afganistan. Sometimes it seems that wars have to be sustained instead of being won. In my opinion soldiers send to these regions are nothing more than collateral damage to reach the goals of the financial agenda of the American gouvernment. That means that soldiers, people, American citizens are used for the wrong reasons and that makes me mad... I understand when you've lost people in battle you don't want it to be for nothing, or for the wrong reasons. Maybe I'm naive, i dunno. I just hope I'm wrong...

Many people in uniform question the validity and worthiness of a mission, both those who are in leadership and subordinate positions. However, as I previously stated, "...people who train for war are the ones that wish the least for it, regardless of circumstance. After all, it is they who are the ultimate political pawns who have to do the dirty wet work when diplomacy fails." Those aren't just words, those are facts. Nonetheless, when called upon to do their sworn duty, they do it. For the most part soldiers don't get caught up in the politics of the situation. That's not their job. Further more, the military is not a democracy. It is their jobs to carry out their mission, as dictated to them by their Commander and Chief and subsequent chain of command.
No one is more disgusted with the politics of war and the tactics employed thereof than I. Personally I'm all for peace and love and getting along. Unfortunately, everyone doesn't think like me, and while I'm thinking love dove, someone else is thinking about cutting off my head or blowing my family up, because I don't believe what he believes. The fact is, all military people are political pawns, regardless of what country they're from or what political, religious, or economic ideology that they embrace. There are always different degrees of subjective and objective right and wrong of conflict, and quite often the two meet in the nebulous middle. The clouds of war are many.
Many good men and women have been killed or wounded, because of tactics employed in the name of "Political Correctness", as opposed to flat out using the full measure of U.S. might to just win and get it over. That has been the case of every conflict the U.S. has been involved in since the end of World War II. That's not the fault of the military, but rather the fault of the civilian political leaders who are more concerned with domestic and world opinion. Let's not let the media of the hook either. There are legions of news casts, exposes, and documentaries that tend show a slanted sided view. Yes, there are soldiers who don't know what's going on in terms of the politics of the situation. There are also women, children non combatants who have been shown to be killed or wounded. Oh, and let's not forget about the debacle of Abu Ghraib.
For the most part you don't see a equal amount of the news casts, exposes and documentaries, that show the humanitarian side of the military. You don't see the people being interviewed who do know what's going on. The media will play up for month's about prisoner's who were humiliated in some regard at Abu Ghraib (incidentally, those prison guards were tried, convicted and imprisoned), but merely have a small blurb about the inhumane cutting off of a captors head or the flat out shooting of captured soldiers by the insurgents. Hardly fair and balanced reporting.
The bottom line is this, we have a day of remembrance to those men and women who have lost their lives in battle, in service to their country. We all can find right or wrongs of conflict and debate the justification or lunacy of war, but none of it takes away from taking a day to remember those who lost their lives.
